I gave a paper about the transformative power of education (HE & FE) on the weekend of 27 and 28 April to a diverse audience and I made someone cry!

She approached me after and said hearing my findings had brought home to her how far she has come through education.

In my capacity as Higher Education Academic Skills Advisor, I have observed a common trend among students entering higher education with low self-confidence and a lack of belief in their own abilities. To address this issue, I took advantage of my annual opportunity to present a conference paper and initiated a research project on the impact of higher education studies on students’ self-confidence.

Each year, I participate in the Conference, 鈥渁n experimental form of academic community which uses BBC Radio 4 The Archers as a lens through which wider issues can be explored鈥. This year, my research focused on the theme of “Educating Emma,” examining the potential effects of pursuing a foundation degree on a woman in her late 30s who is facing dissatisfaction with her current life trajectory.

I conducted a study to investigate the educational experiences of students from secondary school through to Level 4 and Level 5 in higher education.

In a nutshell, many students agreed with the statement 鈥淢y experience in higher education will give me confidence and self-esteem鈥, contrasting with experiences in secondary education which were not positive.

Several comments provided by students about school highlighted concerns such as the lack of necessary support, the inadequacy of tailored educational programmes to meet their individual needs, instances of bullying or dealing with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), overwhelming academic content particularly in preparation for GCSE examinations, consistent negative feedback leading to disciplinary actions, or being placed in remedial classes.

When asked about their college or sixth form courses, students have a more positive response.

This research demonstrates that what we do in FE and HE is positive, it does make a difference, our attitudes to students does make them feel valued and shows that we believe in their abilities.

This is important for all working in the听sector to acknowledge, especially now.听Students appreciate the distinction听between further education and higher听education provision, recognising that it differs considerably from their prior educational experiences in secondary听school.

In 2023, five retired volunteers helped seven students at 91制片厂 to build an aircraft – in just six months!

Ken Charman, a former CEO and project manager, was the brainchild of the project alongside company director, engineering enthusiast, and long-term friend, Dave Karniewicz. Ken and Dave had built planes before and were excited at the prospect of giving young people the opportunity to learn the skills needed to work as a team and build something truly remarkable.

91制片厂 jumped at the idea of being able to offer such a unique and exciting enrichment project for students to work on alongside their studies. So, once DBS checks, safeguarding, health and safety, and security were all passed; and Ken produced a business case project plan, timeline and budget, 鈥楤uild A Plane鈥 was born!

The Skyranger Swift 3 was the plane of choice. Ken explained: 鈥淚t鈥檚 a highly respected plane and a relatively straightforward build. It comes supplied with all the parts in a box which all fit together without modifications. If you follow the very detailed and well-illustrated instructions and use up all the bits, you have a plane!鈥 He continued: 鈥淚t’s all nuts and bolts, with no welds or glue, and once it’s finished, it has a reputation for being safe and reliable.鈥.

The next step was to recruit a team of volunteers and mentors who had the relevant engineering skills and experience to pass on to the students. Ken reached out to local clubs and societies, including the North Devon Sports & Classic Car Club, to ask if any members would like to volunteer. Just 24 hours later and a fabulous team of retired engineers were ready to go!

Unfortunately, there were unforeseen hurdles at the start of the project due to the kit, which was coming from Ukraine, was held up. But Ken was on the case and geared the students up by purchasing a brand-new off-road buggy which he got students to dismantle, label the components and then put back together again. It was a fabulous introduction to the job ahead, and once the plane arrived, it was all hands on deck!

The build was divided into three workstreams: wings and wheels, fuselage, and instruments and electrics. Everything on the plane relied on the discipline, commitment and attention to detail of both student and volunteer.

The finished aircraft passed its final inspection in August 2023 and passed its test flight at the start of 2024 (after waiting some time for a clear weather window). After a very thorough pre-flight inspection, the team were happy to hear the words 鈥淚t flies nice and smoothly. Well done.鈥.

At the start of the project, all the students sat in a circle to introduce themselves and state what their aspirations were 鈥 interestingly, none of them listed aviation as their passion. Fast forward just 12 months and one of them is studying aerospace engineering at university, and one is determined to pursue an aviation career in the Navy and plans to apply to the BMAA for a pilot training bursary. This is a true testament to the passion and enthusiasm of all involved.

Ken stressed, however, that without the support and inspiration of the fabulous volunteers and mentors, the project couldn鈥檛 have taken off the ground. He said: 鈥淎ll the volunteers agree that working with young people, seeing them develop over the course of a year and helping them as they approach their exams and job interviews, was the most rewarding aspect of the project鈥.

Ken and his crew intend to fly the plane and put in appearances at fates and charity events over the spring and summer, as well as hold an Open Day at RAF Chivenor, so keep an eye out in the skies above North Devon!

One of the most special outcomes of the project was the bond created between the team. Sadly, Dave Karniewicz passed away during the project, but it brought a lot of comfort to Dave鈥檚 family to see the Build A Plane students at his funeral. The students also requested that the plane be called 鈥楰arnie鈥檚 Kite鈥 in memory of dear Dave.

Jackie Theakston-Thomas, Faculty Manager for Digital, Engineering and Transportation at 91制片厂, summed up the project: 鈥淲hat a fantastic opportunity our learners had to be mentored by some highly skilled Engineers and project leads. They learnt valuable skills in working together in small and large teams and saw how the project took shape over a relatively short period of time鈥. She continued: 鈥淭hey came from different areas in the college but joined together to create a product that is now flight worthy and have made new friends for life. This was an excellent project that has made many learners stand out from the crowd in their future progression routes鈥.听

The next stage of the project is to sell the plane with any profits going to charity partners North Devon Hospice and Devon Air Ambulance.

We are immensely proud of the commitment and enthusiasm shown by both our volunteers and our students on achieving such a fantastic achievement, and to Ken for spearheading this very special project and giving a unique opportunity to so many.

Firstly, I would like to give a special thanks to Dr Caroline Chipperfield and Hannah Rollins, you have guided and supported us on this trip and truly changed our lives. You have challenged us to think in new ways, see things from different perspectives and nurtured our growing passions and curiosity in renewables and international relations. Words cannot express how grateful we all are to you both and we will forever be thankful.

It鈥檚 perfect, that renewable energy experts in the land of the setting sun[1], as it is so aptly named, are leaping forth in the race to develop new technologies towards a more renewable and sustainable future using innovative renewable energy solutions. We have recently witnessed the jaw dropping sunsets in Morocco, and the drive to develop renewable technologies and a skilled workforce, during our trip to IFMEREE SA in Tangier.

The purpose of this visit was to further develop international collaboration with other institutions that share the values of our university centre, hence gaining an insight into the world of green skills, renewable energy, and sustainability. Our hosts immersed us both into the taught programmes and Moroccan culture, going above and beyond. To say that the visit was impactful would be an understatement and we will forever be grateful to have been given this opportunity especially as mature students.

We were guided through many educational workshops by the dedicated teaching staff and supported by both staff and students. The level of dedication and expertise in their chosen disciplines, shows through the brilliant projects and innovative ideas. We all made strong connections in just a few days, and it resulted in quite an emotional farewell. We didn鈥檛 want it to end! The passion, enthusiasm, and entrepreneurial spirit witnessed, was infectious and has sparked something within us all.

Reflecting on our experience, many of us have made it our mission to further strengthen that connection with Morocco, and with IFMEREE SA. Losing sleep for many nights, my mind processed all this new information, my emotions and excitement of future prospects, not just for myself but for my fellow students, both establishments and our wider communities. Eventually, making sense of the basics of an idea to develop the 91制片厂 Sustainability Society using the idea to develop the multidisciplinary nature of this trip, to further the concept and develop it back in the U.K.

91制片厂 Sustainability Society

The Sustainability Society is made up of a multidisciplinary team of students who collaborate on innovative projects, supported, and implemented by other organisations and policymakers. Under the umbrella of this Society the teams of students work together on sustainability projects striving towards a net zero future. Running a number of projects alongside one another applying our skills to projects that require them.

Through our research, the Society would work together to solve problems such as how to engage communities in renewable technologies, for example, making wind turbine designs or solar panels more appealing or creating new ideas to fight climate change.

Developing and carrying out a collaborative research project provides an opportunity to gain insight into new areas and enhance research that has or is already being conducted elsewhere.听 It can broaden horizons and aid in the development of mutually beneficial partnerships with each party (and in our case) contributing to solving global problems.

Collaboration is a part of evolution, it鈥檚 in human nature, especially in situations that are complex. Usually, people come together in times of crisis and to stop bad things from happening. This project, like many others we know of, focuses on using collaboration for good. Collaboration begins with people and is vital for firms to survive and to thrive. We can pool our resources, skill sets and curious minds to become more innovative, effective, and efficient. After all, Innovation is the machine that powers the continual transformation of the worlds energy system[2].

Many organisations within the renewables sector say that it is the time for a new evolution, to 鈥榚mbrace digitisation鈥 and use these platforms as a catalyst for collaborative projects. It is no longer a luxury that organisations work on solutions individually. Input and ideas are needed from a variety of sources 鈥 whether this is in the adoption of renewable technologies in communities or other installations where the costs of developing projects can be quite high.

As a student of psychology and with a particular interest in behavioural science and renewables, there are many project ideas and research questions that could be investigated. 听This project can act as a catalyst for any future research. Alongside the global goal of achieving net zero by the year 2050, The 91制片厂 Sustainability Society, would like to contribute to this with the development of a new model, using a digital platform and software.

What does the software include?

This tool will be designed with collaboration in mind. A modern application with a variety of functions such as a meeting room function with a chat feed, teams can for example, CAD design remotely, students will be able to use a knowledgebase of relevant data and research available for reference, make notes collaboratively with the document writing and a research storage facility. It will also have the additional option of data collection. Researchers can develop and distribute surveys, and similar experiments via the platform. Data is then sent straight to a secure file linked with the project in question. Each project will have its own secure area with protected files, to protect intellectual property, and any patents or copywrite.

Once projects are completed, they can be added to the green innovations map. The map will highlight the projects completed and will show progress towards the global goal. This tool will allow for seamless collaboration between international organisations. The benefits of this tool are the obvious strengthening of international relations/ collaborations by simplifying communication and that it keeps everything 鈥榠n one place鈥 for researchers.

Where do you come in?

We are initially looking for students to join our inclusive society. It doesn鈥檛 matter on your background or which course you are studying; you just need to be enthusiastic about our cause. We are seeking students with computer science and/or software engineering skills to assist in the development of the digital platform. Are you passionate about climate change, do you wish to use your digital to start to change the world? Let鈥檚 join, collaborate, and make this dream a reality.

In this fast-paced world, many are questioning the need for education, especially at a higher level. When AI and bots are on hand to answer questions 鈥 what value does a qualification bring to our society, to employers or individuals?听

We believe we can answer that! We are no longer focusing simply on our students鈥 learning facts but supporting them in developing the skills and experience to use that knowledge; to work in teams; to identify and communicate both the challenges and the possible solutions and to bring their view into multifaceted situations.听听

Alongside this, we are looking at how we can incorporate creativity and innovation skills, teach and assess our students so there is a greater emphasis on working on live briefs, a global mindset, solving problems and having something real they can contribute back to their communities.

Dr Caroline Chipperfield, Director for Higher Education at 91制片厂, said: 鈥淭o reflect these changes, and greater clarity of purpose, we are renaming our degree-level provision to create the University Centre for Northern Devon.鈥

This exciting change reflects more than thirty years of teaching degree-level qualifications in partnership with the University of Plymouth. 91制片厂 is proud that this partnership will continue and develop as we extend links with other institutions both in the UK and overseas.

Dr Caroline Chipperfield added: 鈥淥ur aspiration is for everyone living and working across Torridge, North and Mid Devon to experience the positive benefit of having a University Centre on their doorstep. Whether it is the skilled workforce we train, the learning we create with our degree-level students, our lecturers working with companies to develop and grow their business, our students working as interns in organisations, or supporting learning in the school classroom. Our community is at the very heart of our strategy.鈥

The University Centre for Northern Devon is at the heart of the North Devon Biosphere, with ambitious plans to support the skills needs of emerging industries in maritime, renewables and net-zero. It is also responding to the complex skills demands of a changing population, a healthcare revolution, the evolution of new technologies and the impact of climate change.听

Peter Morrish, Technology & Customer Support Manager at CMTG and representing the Northern Devon Futures Group, said: 鈥淭he University Centre is a real asset to our local community. It offers more than just a degree; it provides opportunities for growth and development in Northern Devon. The Centre is transforming the way we learn and innovate, and it serves as a hub for our most promising industries, including advanced engineering, health, hospitality, clean maritime and green energy. By fostering research and creativity, it is shaping the future of our community and producing the next generation of leaders and thinkers. The University Centre is not just about education; it’s about creating a future where everyone can thrive together.鈥

Dr Caroline Chipperfield concluded: 鈥淭he University Centre is dedicated to promoting the opportunities available here, on the doorstep, to our young people and to those looking to change careers or return to education. Encouraging people to train and study here, and to support our communities and businesses to grow both in size and success, is our passion. Study or work with us, we are here for you. Here鈥檚 to building a fantastic future for everyone!鈥
